Teeth Whitening Comparison
Numerous products are present in the market today that claim to whiten your teeth more successfully than others.
All teeth whitening products have common active ingredient carbamide peroxide. Whitening gels usually contain 5%-22% carbamide peroxide. The higher the strength of peroxide, stronger is the product.
Teeth whitening products can be compared on the basis of ease of use, patient's comfort, their effectiveness, results and cost. Most of the off-the-shelf products like gels, strips, trays are a cheaper way to whiten your teeth but their results are not long lasting.
Whitening toothpastes to some extent remove the surface stains and make teeth look 1-2 shades lighter but since they do not contain a whitening agent, the results are not long lasting.
At-home kits containing non-moldable trays are quite cheap and give fair results, but the ill- fitting trays can be very cumbersome.
Peroxide strips can be self-applied and easy to put but they require at least 15 days application for them to show any results. The usually lighten the teeth color by 2-3 shades.
Paint-on gels are not very effective. Moreover they are difficult to apply and care should be taken while applying the gel. It should not come in contact with gums and lips as it can cause irritation. The results with these are not seen immediately and they take about few weeks.
In-office treatments offered by dentists are the most effective but they are very costly; almost 600 $ on an average per visit. Here, peroxide gel is applied to the surface and a laser or light activates the whitening agent. This quickens the process and results are immediate. In an hours' time, teeth can be lightened by 8-10 shades.
There is a third category also which is custom made trays which consumers can use at home. The dentists dispense these trays so they are not ill fitting. They can be worn in the night or during the day easily by the patient. Results are very good in fact comparable to an in-office treatment. Cost wise, this option is costlier than the at-home kits but cheaper than the in-office treatments.
